At Stewarts of Trent Bridge, Lee, the head roaster makes it his aim every day to get more people drinking better coffee. Stewarts understands that many people still use instant coffee instead of experiencing coffee at it's best.
Their approach to coffee means you don't need to be a trained barista, have the latest coffee gadgets or an expensive espresso machine to enjoy a good cup of coffee from a traceable source.
How it All Started
In 1984 local entrepreneur Stewart Falconer imported a 1978 small batch Probat GN-12 coffee roaster, built in Germany. As time went on, he started a mail order service delivering delicious coffees everywhere.
In 2013, as Stewart was considering slowing down, so he invited Nathan and his team to take on his company and, with his guidance, they fell in love with the flavour and taste of great fresh coffee and are now bringing it to a larger audience.
Not only is their coffee in local recognisable hotels, cafes, and restaurants, but there are plenty of home baristas' receiving and enjoying regular, quality coffee from them on a monthly basis, through their subscription services.
In 2015, Stewart passed away, but his legacy continues through the directors of the company; Nathan Barton, Mark Whittaker and Monika Häfeli Barton, as well as newer additions to the team; including Lee, head roaster, and Aaron, currently on placement from Nottingham Trent University.
These five are continuing to focus on great quality coffee and customer service delivered through their retail, subscription and wholesale services.
The Ethics Behind Stewarts of Trent Bridge
Stewarts uses green coffee beans which are traceable back to the farmer or the cooperative to ensure a fair relationship persists. Stewarts use a mixture of single origins and blends to vary their selection of coffee.
The single origins are specialty graded and all have unique characteristics in both aroma and taste. These coffees are often filled with floral or fruity flavour notes and are noticeably unique.
The blends often offer a combination of characteristics from two or more origins resulting in a balanced cup, often working well to create that perfect chocolaty espresso recipe.

Head Roaster
Lee is currently the head roaster, originally born in North London. Before moving to Nottingham, Lee was considered a Rum Connoisseur.
In this environment is where Lee discovered his love for coffee, primarily to get him through the long days. Once Lee decided he wanted a career and life change, he decided to move away from the busy London life, and later decided on Nottingham.
Originally, he continued with what he knew until he discovered a new café opening Blend (owned by Stewarts). It was here where he tackled his new found love for coffee in the role of a Barista. Over the first year working at Blend, Lee decided he wanted to pursue coffee roasting out of curiosity, and approached Nathan to train him in the art.
Now, Lee is a confident roaster and is able to profile new green beans that come into the roastery successfully.
