Dark Woods Coffee is an adventurous coffee roaster, Barista school, and pop-up café nestled on the edge of Marsden village in the West Yorkshire Pennines.

Where it All Began

Though Dark Woods was born in 2013, the history of its founding partners takes in many years' experience in roasting, sourcing, consultancy, training and machine development within the UK coffee industry.

It is this collective knowledge and expertise that has allowed the brand to rapidly establish a growing customer base that includes some of the country's top cafés and restaurants.

The Ethics Behind Darkwoods Coffee

First and foremost they choose their coffees because they taste great. Stunning examples of classic flavours, more unusual and surprising selections, or coffees that bring key attributes to a blend.

Each one is carefully selected by a series of rigorous cuppings (tasting), from the team at Dark Woods. An array of flavours to suit a wide range of styles and tastes - no one coffee suits all!

They work with all sorts of farms, some established farms passed down through the generations, to small farmers, to community run co-operatives.

Most of the time a lifetime of experience, skilled agronomy, and shrewd business brains are behind the top coffee producers.

What You Will Find Inside at Darkwoods Coffee

Coffee is roasted by hand on a 1950's Probat drum roaster in a beautifully refurbished Victorian textile mill beside the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and River Colne.

The dramatic, windswept valley inspires the mood and flavours of the exceptional seasonal coffees that come out of Darkwoods Coffee.

The staff here want nothing more than for their customers to enjoy the finest coffee and that it would be accessible to everyone by offering a range of roasts and styles that truly reflects what people want to drink.

They also offer barista training.

Paul was one of the first barista trainers in the UK to deliver training programmes that engaged with some of the scientific principles that are now enshrined within the Speciality Coffee Association.

He was a leading figure in developing the course content for its Barista Skills programme which is now taught worldwide. We offer full and free access to the programme to wholesale customers and to paying private individuals.

Courses are taught at the Mill by SCA accredited trainer Tom who is also on hand to deliver regular on-site training, audits and friendly encouragement.

Blue Coffee Box is featuring two of their iconic blends this month in our subscription box.
