Since its establishment in 2006, Small Batch Coffee has become a household name in Brighton & Hove, known for its high-quality coffee sourced from different parts of the world. The team behind Small Batch Coffee is passionate about providing its customers with the highest caliber coffee available, sourced from four continents and over 20 countries. They believe that the location of coffee's cultivation influences its flavor, and to ensure both freshness and quality, they roast in small batches. Visiting producers regularly, they aim to work with the same farms year after year to develop long-term, mutually beneficial relationships. This not only ensures consistency in the quality of their coffee but also supports sustainable and ethical practices in coffee production.
Small Batch Coffee's Expansion and Quality Assurance
Small Batch Coffee has a roastery located in Sussex and five retail outlets. Here they are providing the finest espresso and filter coffee to customers and 200 businesses across the country. The company's commitment to quality is evident in the care they take in every step of the coffee-making process, from sourcing to roasting to brewing. The team at Small Batch Coffee is led by Colin Morrison, the managing director, and Dumo Mathema, the head of coffee, both of whom have over a decade of experience in the coffee industry. Colin worked for global and UK-based roasters before joining Small Batch, while Dumo developed his skills as a barista and trainer in London before taking on his current role. "The very first cup of coffee I ever remember drinking was cafetiere coffee served with freshly baked scones by my grandmother it's a scent I will never forget. (Colin)
Finding the Right Balance
At the Portslade office, Dumo and his team roast five days a week using a Loring Kestrel and a Probat P12. While he has always roasted with conduction heat, the Loring is the first to use convection, which allows him to achieve the same flavor profile by balancing both each day. For Dumo, roasting coffee is a journey of discovery, and he enjoys the challenge of finding the right balance to bring out the best in every batch. Small Batch Coffee believes that what separates them from other roasters is that they are always led by the coffee, not by trends. Excellent coffee will always be loved, and they strive to maintain their commitment to quality in everything they do.
Brewing Up a Storm in Brighton
Small Batch Coffee is not content to rest on its laurels, and the company has recently launched a mobile coffee cart that will travel around town and be available to hire for events. This is in addition to its five cafes across Brighton and Hove. One of my favourite coffee origins is natural Ethiopian. There is just something about the right balance of depth and flavour that draws me in. (Dumo) The team at Small Batch Coffee is always looking for ways to improve their craft and make a positive impact on their community. They want to be recognized as a roaster that leads with flavor and creative inspiration and is loved and appreciated by all, not just specialty coffee lovers. Dumo advises new roasters to get as much information as they can from as many roasters as possible and to read Roast Magazine's 'The Book of Roast,' which he calls his bible.
Passion in every cup
Small Batch Coffee's passion for quality coffee is evident in every cup they serve. From their commitment to sourcing the finest beans from around the world to their meticulous roasting process, they strive for excellence at every step. Their dedication to their craft has earned them a loyal following in Brighton & Hove, and their mobile coffee cart is sure to bring their high-quality coffee to even more customers.
